Goodbye Styrofoam, Hello Leaks? 4 Costly Mistakes Nigerian Importers Make Switching to Plastic Takeaway Packs
Written by the Alfa Foil manufacturing team, Eminent Trade and Export Pvt. Ltd., Raipur, India. ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 22000:2018 certified food packaging manufacturer.
Lagos banned Styrofoam food packs in January 2024, and on 1 July 2025 the state began full enforcement of its wider single-use plastics ban. Restaurants did not stop selling takeaway. They switched to rigid plastic takeaway packs, and importers rushed to fill the gap. That rush is where the trouble started: packs that crack when stacked, lids that lift off hot jollof, and soups that leak into a rider’s bag before the order reaches the customer.
This guide comes from Alfa Foil, a plastic food container manufacturer India for Nigeria and the wider African market. We already export our DAKON takeaway range to Nigeria and across Africa, and the four mistakes below are the ones we see most often when importers move from Styrofoam to plastic.
If you are choosing a plastic food container manufacturer India for Nigeria for the first time, start with what the law actually changed.
What Lagos Actually Banned, and What It Didn’t
Lagos banned Styrofoam packs and a short list of thin, single-use plastic items. Rigid plastic food containers are not on that list. Here is what the state has put in force.
| Item | Status in Lagos | In force from |
|---|---|---|
| Styrofoam (expanded polystyrene) food packs | Banned | January 2024 |
| Plastic straws | Banned | 1 July 2025 |
| Plastic spoons, forks and knives | Banned | 1 July 2025 |
| Disposable plastic cups | Banned | 1 July 2025 |
| Nylon bags under 40 microns | Banned | 1 July 2025 |
| Rigid plastic takeaway containers | Not on the published list | — |
Rigid plastic containers do not appear on the list announced by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources. Not being on a ban list is not the same as a formal approval, so confirm your specific product with your clearing agent before you commit to a container load. One practical consequence is simple: if you sell into Lagos, leave disposable plastic cups off your order.
At federal level, NESREA unveiled the National Environmental (Plastic Waste Control) Regulations 2026 in September 2026. The regulations are built on extended producer responsibility, which means businesses that place plastic products on the Nigerian market, importers included, share responsibility for them at end of life. Ask your agent what that means for your registration before your first shipment.
Mistake 1: Replacing Styrofoam With the Thinnest Pack You Can Find
The cheapest plastic pack on the market is usually thin-wall PET: clear, light and designed for cold food. Styrofoam insulated hot food; thin PET does not, and it softens with heat. Fill it with hot jollof rice or a pepper-heavy stew, stack three orders in a delivery box on a Chowdeck or Glovo run through Lagos traffic, and the weakest pack gives way first.
Polypropylene (PP) is the material built for hot food. DAKON takeaway packs are made from food-grade PP, with walls rigid enough to stack and snap-fit lids that seal around the full rim. From the factory floor, these are the three failures we see when importers buy on unit cost alone:
- Lid lift. Steam from hot rice pushes a loose lid off its seat, and soup escapes at the corner.
- Corner cracks. Thin walls split when a stacked pack is squeezed in a delivery bag.
- Rim warp. The pack distorts with heat, so the lid never closes properly again.
Each of these turns into a refund, a one-star review and a restaurant that stops buying from your distributor. Our guide to preventing food leakage during delivery covers lid and seal design in more depth.
Mistake 2: Buying Without the Documents SONCAP Asks For
Food packaging imported into Nigeria goes through SONCAP, the conformity programme of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria. An importer whose plastic food container manufacturer India for Nigeria cannot produce the right paperwork finds out at the port, which is the most expensive place to find out.
The Product Certificate comes before Form M
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria requires a Product Certificate, issued by one of its accredited firms after a conformity assessment, before Form M can be opened. A Product Certificate 1 covers a single shipment; the registered and licensed routes are valid for a year.
The SONCAP Certificate clears the goods
At the Nigerian end, the SONCAP Certificate is a mandatory customs clearance document. SON issues it once the accredited firm has issued its Certificate of Conformity.
Form M and PAAR now run on B’Odogwu
In July 2025 the Nigeria Customs Service moved Form M processing from NICIS II to its B’Odogwu platform, where importers now raise the Pre-Arrival Assessment Report (PAAR). Your clearing agent runs this step, but it only moves as fast as your supplier’s documents allow.
The documents your supplier must hand you
At minimum, ask for ISO certificates, a third-party test report on the actual product, product photographs and specifications, and a clean commercial invoice and packing list.
For DAKON, the test report comes from a NABL-accredited laboratory: overall migration was measured at 0.33 mg/dm² against a permitted limit of 10.0 mg/dm² under test method IS 9845:1998. See the full DAKON laboratory test results. Alfa Foil’s quality and food-safety systems are certified to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 22000:2018, with HACCP in place.

Mistake 3: Stocking One Size When Nigerian Menus Need Five
Nigerian takeaway is sold in a handful of standard pack sizes, and local sellers list 750 ml, 1,000 ml and larger packs for rice, swallow and soups. An importer who stocks only one size loses every restaurant whose menu needs the others. The right size depends on the dish, so here is how DAKON’s stocked range maps to a typical Nigerian menu.
| Dish or order | DAKON pack | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Jollof or fried rice, single portion | 750 ml rectangular | Flat fill, stacks cleanly in delivery bags |
| Rice with dodo or beans | 1,000 ml with a 2-compartment insert | Keeps the sides apart and dry |
| Swallow (eba, amala, pounded yam) | 500 ml tall round | Holds its shape under a tight lid |
| Soups and stews | 500–750 ml round with snap lid | Liquid needs the full-rim seal |
| Moi moi, ewa agoyin, puff-puff | 500 ml rectangular or round | Right portion, easy to stack |
| Pepper sauce and dips | 50–100 ml round | Side portions without spills |
| Party and owambe orders | 2,500–4,500 ml buckets | Event quantities in one container |
Treat these as starting points, not rules, because portions vary by city and by restaurant. Every size in the table is a DAKON pack we manufacture and stock today, from the 500 ml pack and 750 ml pack to the 1,000 ml range and 2,500–4,500 ml plastic food buckets for party orders.
Mistake 4: Planning Freight by the Carton, Not the Container
Plastic takeaway packs are light and bulky, so your freight cost per pack is decided by how many fit in a container, not by what a carton weighs. Nested containers with lids packed separately fill a 20ft or 40ft container very differently from lidded packs, and that difference goes straight into your landed cost.
Most sea freight into Nigeria lands at the Lagos ports (Apapa, Tin Can Island and the newer Lekki Deep Sea Port), which handle the large majority of the country’s seaborne trade. Plan the container mix of sizes, lids and dividers with your plastic food container manufacturer India for Nigeria before booking, not after. Our container load planning guide walks through the method step by step.
What a Plastic Food Container Manufacturer India for Nigeria Should Show You
Before you place a first order, a serious plastic food container manufacturer India for Nigeria should be able to show you all six of these:
- Its own factory, not a trading intermediary, so it controls resin, wall thickness and lid fit.
- ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 22000:2018 certificates, plus HACCP.
- A third-party laboratory test report on the product you are buying.
- A full size range, from sauce cups to buckets, so one supplier fills the whole order.
- Real export experience, including shipments into Nigeria.
- Clear product specifications for your SONCAP paperwork.

The ban covers Styrofoam food packs (since January 2024) and, since 1 July 2025, plastic straws, plastic cutlery, disposable plastic cups and nylon bags under 40 microns. Confirm your specific product with your clearing agent before you ship.
What sizes do takeaway packs come in?
A plastic food container manufacturer India for Nigeria should cover the full run of sizes Nigerian restaurants use: 500 ml to 1,000 ml packs for single meals, 50–100 ml cups for pepper sauce, and 2,500–4,500 ml buckets for party orders. The DAKON range runs from 25 ml to 4,500 ml.
How many ml is a standard takeaway pack?
Most single-meal takeaway packs in Nigeria hold 750 ml to 1,000 ml. Smaller 500 ml packs suit swallow and side dishes, and 50–100 ml cups carry pepper sauce and dips.
What documents do I need to import plastic food containers from India to Nigeria?
Your plastic food container manufacturer India for Nigeria should hand you ISO certificates, a third-party product test report, product specifications, a commercial invoice and a packing list. With those, your agent obtains the SONCAP Product Certificate, opens Form M, raises the PAAR on B’Odogwu and clears the goods with the SONCAP Certificate.
What will replace Styrofoam in Nigeria?
Restaurants in Lagos have moved to rigid plastic takeaway packs, paper boxes and leaf-based wraps. For hot food, rigid polypropylene packs are the closest like-for-like replacement, because they hold their shape with hot rice and stews and seal against leaks.
Can plastic takeaway packs hold hot food?
Yes, if they are made of polypropylene (PP). Thin PET packs are designed for cold food and soften with heat. DAKON packs are food-grade PP, built for hot rice, stews and soups.
