5 Critical Tests: How to Check if a Plastic Food Container Is Food Safe

Short answer: you cannot tell by looking. To know whether a plastic food container is food safe, you need an overall migration test result from a NABL-accredited third-party laboratory, measured in mg/dm² against a permitted limit of 10.0, plus results for phthalates, heavy metals and colour migration. Everything else — the feel of the plastic, the clarity, the thickness, the seller’s word — tells you nothing.
Walk through any wholesale packaging market in Delhi, Ahmedabad or Ludhiana and you will find hundreds of disposable containers that look identical. Same clarity, same snap-fit lid, same stack. Ask any of those sellers for a laboratory test report and most of them will hand you nothing at all, because none exists. That is the actual problem in this market: the information you need to judge whether a plastic food container is food safe is almost never available at the point of purchase.
This article explains how that judgement is made properly. We use the July 2026 third-party test results for our own DAKON containers as the worked example throughout, so you can see what real numbers look like and apply the same method to any supplier you are evaluating. By the end you will know exactly how to check if a plastic food container is food safe — not by trusting a claim, but by reading a report.
Why Most Disposable Containers Carry No Evidence At All
Because independent testing costs money and unverified claims cost nothing. In practice, most traders importing or repacking containers never commission third-party analysis, and nobody at the point of sale asks them to. The phrase “food grade” gets printed on cartons and quoted on the phone with no document behind it.
This matters most for the people handling the highest volumes. A cloud kitchen in Ahmedabad filling 400 curry containers a night, a caterer packing 2,000 meals for a wedding, a dhaba doing tiffin supply — all of them are putting hot, oily, acidic food into plastic for hours at a time. That is the exact condition under which a container is most likely to transfer something into the food.
So the practical question a buyer should ask is not “is this food grade?” It is “show me the test report.” The difference between those two questions is the difference between a claim and evidence, and it is the only reliable way to establish whether a plastic food container is food safe before you commit to a bulk order.
What Overall Migration Means — And Why It Is the Core Test
Overall migration measures how much material, in total, moves out of the plastic and into the food it holds. It is expressed in milligrams per square decimetre of container surface (mg/dm²), and the permitted limit under the test method used here is 10.0 mg/dm². This single measurement is the foundation of any honest answer to whether a plastic food container is food safe.
Why the Test Uses Four Different Food Simulants
Food is not one thing, and plastic does not behave the same way against all of it. Ghee-rich biryani, watery dal, tangy tomato gravy and a sweet drink each interact with the container differently. A laboratory cannot test every dish, so it uses standardised liquids called food simulants, each chosen to stand in for a category of real food.
- n-heptane — stands in for fatty and oily food. Think gravies, fried items, anything cooked in oil or ghee.
- Distilled water — stands in for watery food such as dal, rasam and plain rice.
- 3% acetic acid — stands in for acidic food. Tomato-based curries, tamarind, pickle, chutney.
- 10% and 50% ethanol — stand in for foods with a higher solvent character, and act as the more aggressive end of the test range.
The containers are held in contact with these simulants under controlled temperature and time — in this case 38°C for half an hour for the fatty simulant, and 40°C for ten full days for the others. Ten days at 40°C is far harsher than anything a takeaway container experiences in real service, which is the point. The test is designed to push the material.
What the 10.0 mg/dm² Limit Actually Represents
It is the ceiling, not the target. A result anywhere below 10.0 mg/dm² passes, but a result that sits just under the line and a result far below it describe two very different materials. When you are comparing suppliers, the gap between the measured figure and the limit is the number that separates them — and it is the clearest single indicator of whether a plastic food container is food safe by a comfortable margin or by a narrow one.
The Five Migration Results, Measured Against the Limit
Here is what independent testing returned for DAKON containers. Twenty units were submitted to ISSPL Limited Testing Laboratory in Jaipur, Rajasthan — a NABL-accredited laboratory, accreditation number TC-5843, part of the IRCLASS group. The sample was received on 18 July 2026 and tested from 18 to 28 July 2026, with reports issued on 17 August 2026. These are measurements, not claims — and this is the format of evidence every buyer should expect when asking whether a plastic food container is food safe.

Read the worst row, not the best one. The highest result across all five test conditions was 0.33 mg/dm² — approximately 3% of the permitted 10.0 mg/dm² limit, or about thirty times below the ceiling. When you are assessing whether a plastic food container is food safe, that headroom is what matters: on none of the five conditions tested — including the fatty and acidic simulants that stand in for Indian kitchen conditions — did the result sit anywhere near the boundary.

Heavy Metals and Phthalates: The Results Most Buyers Never Ask For
Overall migration is a total. It does not tell you what migrated. That is why a complete assessment of whether a plastic food container is food safe also tests for specific substances of concern — the ones that matter at very small quantities.
Phthalates. These are plasticisers used to make some plastics softer and more flexible. The one tested here is DEHP, or bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate. The DAKON result was below the limit of quantification, with an LOQ of 0.025 mg/kg, against a permitted limit of 1.5 mg/kg.
Heavy metals. Eight were tested individually: antimony, barium, cobalt, copper, iron, lithium, manganese and zinc. All eight came back below the limit of quantification.
What “Below Limit of Quantification” Means
It means the laboratory’s instruments could not measure any meaningful quantity of the substance. Every analytical method has a floor — the smallest amount it can reliably put a number to. That floor is the LOQ. A result of “BLQ” means the substance was not detectable above that floor.
It is worth being precise about this, because it is where overstated marketing usually creeps in. BLQ is not the same as an absolute guarantee of zero. It means: below the point at which this method can quantify anything, which for DEHP here was an LOQ of 0.025 mg/kg, against a permitted limit of 1.5 mg/kg. That is the honest reading, and honest readings are what let a distributor defend the decision that a plastic food container is food safe when their own client asks.
Colour Migration: The Result Distributors Feel First
Colour migration is dye or pigment bleeding out of the container into the food. It was tested separately under test method IS 9833:2018, and the DAKON result was: no visual colour migration.
This is the test with the most immediate commercial consequence. Heavy metals are invisible; a faint tint in a customer’s curry is not. If pigment leaches into hot or oily food, the complaint travels fast — the diner tells the restaurant, the restaurant calls the distributor, and the distributor is the one holding a container load of stock nobody wants. Plenty of returns in this trade start exactly there.
For a distributor, a clean colour migration result is therefore not an abstract safety point. It is a returns-risk point, and it belongs in any practical check of whether a plastic food container is food safe. A supplier who can show a colour migration result alongside migration figures is giving you both halves of the answer.
How to Verify Any Laboratory Report Yourself
Any supplier can email you a PDF. Four checks tell you whether it is real and whether it is relevant to the goods you are being offered. Run these on our report and on everyone else’s — this is the part of the process that genuinely determines whether a plastic food container is food safe or merely described that way.
1. Find the NABL accreditation number
NABL is India’s national accreditation body for testing laboratories. An accredited lab carries a TC number — ours is TC-5843. If the report has no accreditation number, the testing carries no independent weight. You can confirm a laboratory’s accreditation status through NABL India directly.
2. Check for a ULR number
The ULR, or Unique Letter Report number, is a traceable identifier issued for an accredited report. The one covering these DAKON results is TC584326110000168F. A report without a ULR should raise an immediate question.
3. Read the dates and the sample description
A report should state what was submitted, how many units, when it was received and over what period it was tested. Here: DAKON Plastic Food Container, 20 units, received 18/07/2026, tested 18/07/2026 to 28/07/2026. Vague sample descriptions are a warning sign — if the report does not name the product, it may not be describing the product you are buying.
4. Note the scope line
Accredited reports carry a line stating that results relate only to the item tested. This is not fine print to skip past. It means the report is evidence about a specific sample of a specific product, and nothing else. A supplier who shows you a report for one product and implies it covers their whole range is misusing it. Establishing that a plastic food container is food safe requires a report that names that container.
What This Report Does Not Cover
These results speak only to the parameters tested, on one sample lot of DAKON plastic food containers submitted in July 2026. They are evidence you can weigh when judging whether a plastic food container is food safe — they are not a blanket statement about the product. They do not extend to aluminium foil containers, foil rolls, cling film or garbage bags — those are different materials and would require their own testing.
The report is also a point-in-time record, not a permanent status. That is true of every laboratory report from every supplier, which is why the fourth check above matters so much. Anyone telling you a single test settles the question of whether a plastic food container is food safe forever is overselling it. What a report gives you is verified evidence for a defined product and a defined date, which is considerably more than the market usually offers.
