Aluminium Foil Container in Air Fryer: The Exact Size for Your 2–8 Litre Basket
By the Alfa Foil packaging team — makers of aluminium foil containers and foil rolls in Raipur, ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 22000:2018 certified.
Yes, you can use an aluminium foil container in an air fryer — as long as it leaves 1–2 cm of space around it for air to move, and the food sits well below the heating element. The part most guides skip is which container actually fits. That depends on the size of your basket, so this guide matches Alfa’s foil container range to 2, 4, 6 and 8 litre air fryers, plus OTGs.
Foil containers are popular with air fryer owners for a simple reason: nothing sticks to the basket, sauces don’t drip into the drawer, and clean-up takes seconds. Used the right way, a foil container in air fryer cooking is one of the easiest ways to reheat leftovers, bake a small cake or cook a saucy dish without a mess.
Can you put an aluminium foil container in an air fryer?
Yes. An air fryer is a small convection oven — a heating element and a fan blowing hot air around the food — and aluminium foil containers are made for oven heat. Aluminium melts at about 660°C; most home air fryers top out at 200–230°C, so the container itself is not the risk.
Using a foil container in air fryer cooking is safe; the real risks are two: blocked airflow (the food cooks unevenly and stays soggy) and loose foil reaching the heating element. A rigid foil container that is filled with food and smaller than the basket avoids both, which is why it behaves better than a loose sheet of foil.
Brands do differ, so check your manual first. Philips, for example, does not recommend baking paper or foil in its Airfryer, because covering the bottom of the basket reduces airflow and foil without food on it can be sucked into the heating element (Philips support). If your manual says no foil, follow your manual.
Foil container in air fryer: which size fits your basket?
Any foil container in air fryer baskets should fit with at least 1–2 cm of free space on every side. As a rule of thumb, a 2–3 litre basket takes something about 12–13 cm across, a 4 litre basket about 15 cm, a 5–6 litre basket about 18 cm and an 8 litre basket about 20 cm. Here is what that means for Alfa’s range:
| Air fryer basket | Usable floor (approx.) | Alfa foil containers that fit |
|---|---|---|
| 2–3 litre | ~12–13 cm | 70 ml, 100 ml, 120 ml, 140 ml |
| About 4 litre | ~15 cm | All of the above + 210 ml, 250 ml. 450 ml and the 6 inch round are tight — measure first |
| 5–6 litre | ~18 cm | All of the above + 450 ml and 6 inch round comfortably. 7 inch round is tight |
| 7–8 litre, or large square baskets | ~20 cm | All of the above + 7 inch round, 600 ml oval, 900 ml. 660 ml and 750 ml: check the length |
| OTG or oven-style air fryer | Tray size | Usually every size, including the 3CP and 4CP compartment containers |
Round basket, rectangular container? In a round basket it is the corner-to-corner length of the container that has to fit, not its width. If your basket is round, go one size down from the table. Square-ish baskets take rectangular containers much more easily.
The basket sizes above are a general guide. How a foil container in air fryer baskets of the same “litre” rating fits can differ from brand to brand. Two minutes with a ruler settles it.

How to measure your air fryer basket in 30 seconds
- Pull out the basket and measure the inside of the floor, wall to wall, at its narrowest point.
- Take away 3–4 cm (1–2 cm for each side). That is the largest container top that will fit.
- Look at the gap between the basket rim and the heating element when the drawer is closed. Keep the top of the food at least 3 cm below the element.
6 rules for a foil container in air fryer cooking
These six habits keep a foil container in air fryer cooking safe and the food evenly done:
- Never preheat with an empty container inside. An empty foil container is light enough for the fan to lift it towards the heating element. Put it in with the food.
- Fill it, or weigh it down. The weight of the food keeps the container flat and still.
- Leave 1–2 cm around it. Hot air has to move up the sides of the basket. A container wall-to-wall turns your air fryer into a slow oven.
- Keep the food below the element. Don’t heap food above the rim, and keep about 3 cm of headroom.
- Go easy on very sour or salty dishes on long cooks. Aluminium can react with highly acidic foods such as tomato gravy, tamarind or lemon-heavy marinades. For quick reheats it is fine; for long cooking of sour dishes, use a ceramic or steel dish. More on this in our guide on whether aluminium foil is safe for hot food.
- Take the lid off. Paper-board and plastic lids are made for storage and delivery, not for 200°C. Remove them, and lift the container out with tongs or a cloth — the rim gets hot.

Foil container, foil sheet or parchment liner — which should you use?
Each one suits a different job. A foil container in air fryer cooking is best for anything wet or saucy; for dry snacks you want the air to reach the food directly.
| What you are cooking | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reheating pulao, biryani, sabzi | Foil container | Holds moisture and oil, no drips in the drawer |
| Small cakes, brownies, mini pies | Foil container | Acts as the baking tin; nothing to wash |
| Saucy or cheesy dishes | Foil container | Contains the sauce completely |
| Samosa, tikki, fries — when you want crunch | Bare basket, or a small piece of foil under the food | Air needs to reach every side |
| Wrapping food (paneer parcels, corn) | Foil sheet | Seal it tight so no loose edge can lift |
For wrapping, a good-quality aluminium foil roll works best — thin household foil tears easily around corners. Parchment liners are another option for dry snacks; whichever you choose, never leave a liner or a sheet of foil in the basket without food on it.
Can you use the same foil containers in an OTG?
Yes, and with more room to spare. Everything that applies to a foil container in air fryer baskets applies to an OTG too. An OTG is a bigger oven with a fixed tray, so most family-size OTGs take every container in the range, including the 3CP and 4CP compartment containers. The same rules apply: keep the container away from the top and bottom heating rods, and leave space around it on the tray.
If you bake, see our guide to using aluminium foil containers for baking — the 6 inch and 7 inch rounds double as disposable cake tins.

What about the microwave?
The rules for a foil container in air fryer cooking do not carry over to the microwave. The two appliances heat food in completely different ways. An air fryer heats with hot air, which suits a foil container. A microwave heats with microwaves, which metal reflects, and that can cause sparking. So keep foil containers out of the microwave.
For reheating in a microwave, use a container marked microwave-safe — our guide to the microwave-safe symbol shows what to look for. DAKON RO series containers are made from food-grade PP and are microwave-safe.
Which dishes work best in a foil container in the air fryer?
Anything that would make a mess in a bare basket suits a foil container in air fryer cooking. A few that work well in Indian kitchens:
- Reheating pulao, veg biryani or khichdi — 450 ml or 660 ml container, 160–170°C, a splash of water on top.
- Paneer tikka or paneer in gravy — 450–660 ml container; the gravy stays in the container, not in the drawer.
- Poha, upma or pasta — 250–450 ml container for a single portion.
- Reheating samosa, kachori or aloo tikki — use a shallow container only if they are oily; otherwise the bare basket keeps them crisper.
- Small cakes and muffins — 120–140 ml containers.
- Brownies and bread pudding — 250 ml container.
- Mini pies and pot pies — 6 inch round, if your basket is 5 litres or bigger.

Cooking times follow your recipe; the container itself adds very little. Food in a deeper container may need a few extra minutes and a stir halfway.
FAQ: aluminium foil container in air fryer
Can I use an aluminium foil tray in my air fryer?
Yes. An aluminium foil container in air fryer baskets is safe as long as it is smaller than the basket, leaves 1–2 cm of space for airflow, and is filled with food so the fan cannot lift it. Check your air fryer’s manual, as a few brands advise against foil.
Are aluminium containers safe in an air fryer at 200°C?
Yes. Aluminium melts at about 660°C, far above the 200–230°C maximum of home air fryers. The container will get hot but will not melt or warp at normal air fryer settings.
How long can a foil container stay in the air fryer?
As long as your recipe needs. There is no time limit for the container itself. Just avoid long cooks of very sour or salty dishes in aluminium, and keep the container away from the heating element.
Which side of the foil should face the food?
For ordinary foil, it doesn’t matter. The shiny and dull sides come from the last rolling stage at the factory, where two sheets pass through the rollers together; they cook the same. The exception is non-stick foil, which is coated on one side only.
Can I reuse a foil container in the air fryer?
Foil containers are made for single use. A clean container with no dents or thin spots can take a second gentle reheat, but creased foil can split. Recycle it once you are done.
Does a foil container make food less crispy?
A little, at the sides, because the container walls shield the food from moving air. A foil container in air fryer cooking is ideal for moist and saucy dishes. For crisp snacks, use a shallow container or cook directly in the basket.
